INAR RI (Integrated Atmospheric and Earth System Research Infrastructure) has been on the National Research Infrastructure Roadmap since 2014. In 2025 INAR RI was selected as a “Lighthouse” research infrastructure. Lighthouse status was granted to RIs that lead the way in all key infrastructure areas, such as service provision, impact, functionality and shared use. INAR RI acts as an umbrella research infrastructure (RI), taking care of the implementation and national coordination of the ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) infrastructures in the environmental domain in Finland, namely ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds, and Trace gases Research Infrastructure), eLTER (Integrated European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone & Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure) and AnaEE (Infrastructure for Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems). The components of INAR RI study the atmosphere, biosphere and their interactions. The activities in these components are aligned by INAR RI towards common targets and integration of environmental infrastructures in European RI landscape. The cornerstone of INAR RI is the network of advanced field stations such as Pallas-Sodankylä and the SMEAR (Station for Measuring Earth Surface – Atmosphere Relations) stations, which provide services and co-location of measurements for the environmental ESFRIs and set an example at the global level for co-located measurement stations. INAR RI integrates multidisciplinary comprehensive environmental measurements, and its services include open access to long-term observation data, access to research facilities, and instrument development. The research facilitated by INAR RI will have a positive effect on climate resilience, protection from environmental hazards, and human health. INAR RI is developing its top-level measurement stations, producing services easily applicable in society and further integrating the expertise of its research community, providing a strong and unique competence cluster for new knowledge and innovations.
