The entries included in the repository have been checked and categorized according to criteria derived from the EU definition of RIs/Obs (source: RISCAPE Project https://blogs.helsinki.fi/riscape-project/what-is-a-research-infrastructure/ ), as follows:

  • The RI must provide facilities, resources, or related services to researchers, including those from outside the RI institution itself;
  • Thepurpose of the RI services must be to conduct or facilitate research;
  • The RI must have a certain degree of longevity.

In addition to these criteria, the following criterion is included, as it is also considered critical for supporting international research:

  • The capacity of a RI/Ob to establish online networking links with other RIs/Obs and/or end-users.

Thus, the entries have been categorized based on their level of compliance with all the above-mentioned criteria, as follows:

  • Part A includes RIs/Obs that fully meet the criteria and have the     capacity to provide online access to data and/or services.
  • Part B includes more local or institution-based Research Facilities which partially meet the criteria and/or have limited
    data-sharing capabilities

Part A entries were further categorized according to critical factors such as:

  • Governance structure (facilitating the links and collaboration with policy decision makers);
  • Networking capability (enhancing the capacity for developing internal R&I experiments and studies);
  • Data-sharing capacity (improving the capacity for international research and collaboration) and
  • Level of integration within national or international research frameworks (strongly related to funding sustainability and longevity).

So, Part A entries are classified into the following five levels with a maturity spectrum, from emerging to fully structured/open at international level:

  • A.1. ERICs (European Research Infrastructure Consortia)
  • A.2. International RI Networks (e.g. eLTER, OZCAR, TERENO)
  • A.3. Research Infrastructures included in National Roadmaps
  • A.4. Individual RIs and Observatories (regional or single-site) with established networking links. These infrastructures demonstrate established collaboration with other RIs or networks.
  • A.5. Individual RIs and Observatories (regional or single-site) without     established networking links.

A tree-shaped figure (pyramid diagram) illustrates the above classification. As we move upward from the base to the peak of the pyramid, RIs/Obs show increased maturity in structured networking and significance for international research.

Part B entries representing more local or institution-based Research Facilities were further categorized, as follows:

  • B.1. Providing pre – processed data and /or supporting policies
  • B.2. Other Research Facilities with importance for researchers

The Water4All Partnership - Water Security for the Planet - is a funding programme for scientific research in freshwater. It aims to tackle water challenges to face climate change, help to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and boost the EU’s competitiveness and growth.

It is co-funded by the European Union within the frame of the Horizon Europe programme (a key funding programme for research and innovation). The Partnership duration is for seven years from 2022.

The Water4All objective is to enable water security at a large scale and in the long term. Its goal is also to tackle water issues in a holistic frame. 

All forms of life on earth need water. All human activities operate with this resource. Water is part of our everyday life. It is also integrated within urban and countryside landscapes. It is one of the most valuable elements we share with plants and animals.

These simple facts must be kept in mind to understand the Water4All ambition.

This resource is weakened in many places due to climate changes, and human habits. We know that we can improve the way we use water. Everyone has a role to play and especially the scientific research community.

Scientific research is the heart of the Partnership as It is a powerful tool to improve knowledge on preserving, restoring, and managing this essential resource. 

International cooperation is also needed as water has no borders on Earth and runs from one country to another.

Water4All brings together a broad and cohesive group of 90 partners from 33 countries in the European Union and beyond. This consortium gathers partners from the whole water Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) chain.
