Cofunded by the European Union

On 27 March 2025, Water4All participated in “Lezioni d’Europa”, a series of webinars organised by the Europe Direct network of centres with the aim of deepening and disseminating some of the priorities identified in the “European Commission's Work Plan”.

The event represented an important opportunity for professionals, students and citizens interested in European policies and current environmental challenges to discuss and learn.

As part of the lecture titled "The European Union and Water Resilience", Maria Chiara Sole, representing ISPRA, partner in the Water4All Partnership, illustrated the project's multiple activities, contributing to the debate on water resource management strategies and adaptation to change.

During the meeting, some of the European Commission's objectives and actions undertaken by the EU to improve citizens' quality of life through sustainable water management were also analysed.

Water4All represents a concrete example of how partners have joined forces to tackle challenges related to water management

+55%

It is estimated that between 2015 and 2050, global water demand will increase by over 55%, further exacerbated by the effects of climate change, such as floods and droughts.

To address these challenges, the Horizon Europe programme has further boosted research through co-funded partnerships such as Water4All, promoting a cross-sectoral approach that enhances the impact of initiatives for sustainable water management.

Water challenges need a global approach, including all actors

During the meeting, the importance of the project's holistic approach was highlighted as a key strategy to effectively and sustainably address water-related challenges. Water4All actively engages all sector stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, and citizens.

  • One of the Partnership's Pillars, Pillar C, aims to strengthen the link between governance, science, and end users. Innovation and demonstration activities are central to the Partnership, which, among other initiatives, develops the concept of Water-Oriented Living Labs (WOLLs), living labs that bring together policymakers, academia, civil society, and industry at the local level.
  • One of the first achievements of Pillar D of the Partnership is the WOLL Atlas, a database compiling water innovation initiatives co-participated across Europe. This tool represents a milestone in collaboration for sustainable water management, laying the foundations for a network of pilot facilities that foster synergies and enhance cooperation among WOLLs operating in the water sector. The objective is to encourage smart decision-making on water use, invest in innovative solutions, and strengthen partnerships to ensure long-term water security.

Water Resilience: a step forward and raising awareness

Currently, Europe is developing the Water Resilience Strategy, a strategic document on water resilience to which Water4All will contribute with a Position Paper available on the project's website. This document will provide key recommendations for sustainable water management.

Water4All’s participation in the "Lezioni d’Europa" webinar demonstrates the great potential of the initiative and its strategic role in strengthening water resilience at the European level. Through knowledge sharing, dialogue with industry experts, and the promotion of innovative solutions, Water4All contributes to raising awareness and engaging an ever-growing network of stakeholders in sustainable water management. This commitment is crucial to addressing global water challenges, ensuring a more secure and resilient future for European communities and ecosystems.

Other news

The Water4All Partnership - Water Security for the Planet - is a funding programme for scientific research in freshwater. It aims to tackle water challenges to face climate change, help to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and boost the EU’s competitiveness and growth.

It is co-funded by the European Union within the frame of the Horizon Europe programme (a key funding programme for research and innovation). The Partnership duration is for seven years from 2022.

The Water4All objective is to enable water security at a large scale and in the long term. Its goal is also to tackle water issues in a holistic frame.

All forms of life on earth need water. All human activities operate with this resource. Water is part of our everyday life. It is also integrated within urban and countryside landscapes. It is one of the most valuable elements we share with plants and animals.

These simple facts must be kept in mind to understand the Water4All ambition.

This resource is weakened in many places due to climate changes, and human habits. We know that we can improve the way we use water. Everyone has a role to play and especially the scientific research community.

Scientific research is the heart of the Partnership as It is a powerful tool to improve knowledge on preserving, restoring, and managing this essential resource.

International cooperation is also needed as water has no borders on Earth and runs from one country to another.

Water4All brings together a broad and cohesive group of 90 partners from 33 countries in the European Union and beyond. This consortium gathers partners from the whole water Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) chain.
