Water4All Position Paper on the European Water Framework Directive!
The European Commission recently launched a public consultation and Call for Evidence on the targeted revision of the Water Framework Directive, in the context of the RESourceEU Action Plan and the objective of securing access to critical raw materials (CRM) for Europe’s green and digital transitions.
In response to this consultation, Water4All has prepared and submitted a position paper highlighting the importance of preserving the core principles and environmental ambition of the Directive, while ensuring that any future revision remains firmly grounded in robust scientific evidence, transparency, and long-term water resilience objectives.
The paper underlines that strategic autonomy and circularity goals must not come at the expense of water quality, ecosystem protection, or public trust. It calls for a science-based, precautionary and systemic approach to the review process, ensuring coherence with other major EU environmental frameworks, including the Nature Restoration Law and the European Green Deal.
