Given their potential to deliver a wide range of socio-economic benefits and services while also combatting climate change and addressing biodiversity loss, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly seen as a way to meet the objectives of several global agreements.
In a resolution on NbS adopted at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) in March 2022, NbS are defined as “actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience and biodiversity benefits”.
This report explores two approaches to assessing work in NbS. The IUCN report Decent work in Nature-based Solutions underscores the need for a “Just Transition” - greening the economy in a way that is fair and inclusive, creating meaningful work opportunities and leaving no one behind.
