Data Sharing – Learn More and Get Involved

Data Saring constitute an important focus area for Water4All. A dedicated task has been assigned for this topic within Pillar C, and it figured as a key element of the recent SRIA strategic seminar on Digitalization. There are several ways, how you can become updated and involved in the work related to Data Sharing. First some context.

Digitalization is perceived to be among key leavers for addressing the serious challenges facing the water environment – and data constitute the raw material for the digital tools. Our vision is that all relevant data can be found, accessed and reused in an interoperable format – however, due the fragmented structure of the water sector, we have some work ahead of us to realize this vision – which you may also call a FAIRified European Water Data Ecosystem. For researchers and entrepreneurs (innovators) access to relevant data is a prerequisite for delivering relevant digital solutions, and therefore Water4All has a strong focus on Data Sharing, undertaken by Task C.4.3. You are hereby invited to take part!

With this email, we are catching up on a couple of information meetings, which described and discussed the Water4All Task C.4.3 on Data Sharing. Here you can get a quick overview of current and future activities, their expected outputs and long-term perspectives – and how to eventually become involved.

The work follows two overall tracks:

  • To implement a Data Sharing Facility which ensures that data from projects funded by C.4.3 can be found and accessed
  • To communicate recommendations for Best Practices in Water Data Management, based on mutual common experiences as well as results from co-operation on data-sharing, with the aim to contribute to foster a European Water Data Ecosystem based on FAIR principles

… and this work is organized within these Working Groups:

  • WG1 – Towards a European Water Data Ecosystem – White Paper and Data Model
  • WG2 – FAIR Water Data Exchange – Testing of Data Sharing

Working Group –

Towards a European Water Data Ecosystem – White Paper and Data Model

As a contribution to fostering a European Water Data Ecosystem based on FAIR principles, this WG works to communicate recommendations for Best Practices in Water Data Management, based on mutual common experiences as well as results from the co-operation on data-sharing undertaken by WG2. The White Paper is structured in four parts: Potential Value Creation; Barriers and Problems; Envisioning a European Water Data Ecosystem; Recommendations. Currently, focus of the G is on completing the White Paper and discuss how it can be communicated. As a subgroup, a special discussion is established to look into development of an ideal and generic data model covering all (terrain) biosphere element, including the entire water cycle.

This Working Group meet at monthly meetings to discuss progress.

Working Group –

FAIR Water Data Exchange – Testing of Data Sharing

To test and verify barriers and measures to facilitate data sharing, this WG undertake real-life sharing of selected parameters and use cases in order to compile joint observations and share experiences. This work is closely coordinated with similar work in international for a for Data Scientists organized by OGC-WMO, with the ambition of elaborating concrete input for standards. Currently, the WG is about to finalize the first use case, before continuing with the next one. This WG is of relevance to you, if you have interest and competences in undertaking coding of APIs and working with data management at Data Scientist level.

This Working Group meet at least at monthly meetings to discuss progress.

The Water4All Partnership - Water Security for the Planet - is a funding programme for scientific research in freshwater. It aims to tackle water challenges to face climate change, help to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and boost the EU’s competitiveness and growth.

It is co-funded by the European Union within the frame of the Horizon Europe programme (a key funding programme for research and innovation). The Partnership duration is for seven years from 2022.

The Water4All objective is to enable water security at a large scale and in the long term. Its goal is also to tackle water issues in a holistic frame.

All forms of life on earth need water. All human activities operate with this resource. Water is part of our everyday life. It is also integrated within urban and countryside landscapes. It is one of the most valuable elements we share with plants and animals.

These simple facts must be kept in mind to understand the Water4All ambition.

This resource is weakened in many places due to climate changes, and human habits. We know that we can improve the way we use water. Everyone has a role to play and especially the scientific research community.

Scientific research is the heart of the Partnership as It is a powerful tool to improve knowledge on preserving, restoring, and managing this essential resource.

International cooperation is also needed as water has no borders on Earth and runs from one country to another.

Water4All brings together a broad and cohesive group of 90 partners from 33 countries in the European Union and beyond. This consortium gathers partners from the whole water Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) chain.
