Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agro-alimentar do Alentejo (CEBAL) is a private, non-profit R&D unit located in Beja, Portugal. It has the mission to develop scientific and technological knowledge in biotechnology field applied to agroforestry, agro-food, animal and plant genomics, bioinformatics, and waste valorization for a sustainable use of resources.
CEBAL combines R&D activities with technology transfer, being highly involved in postgraduate teaching and training (Masters and PhD students), as well as formation of highly skilled fellows. CEBAL also includes science dissemination activities, reinforcing the need to spread technical and scientific outputs to potential users. CEBAL started its activity in January 2008, has currently 22 institutional associates, and employs 36 researchers, including 7 PhD holders and 14 PhD students. CEBAL has been able to approve several fundamental and applied research projects, as well as business co-promotion and technology transfer projects. CEBAL´s scientific impact has been recognized, by several national and international awards, international publications in recognized journals with peer-review, and 6 international patents.
CEBAL PhD researchers are part of the Research Unit MED - Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, a R&D Unit at University of Évora, Portugal, classified with Excellent, as well belong to the Associated Laboratory CHANGE – Institute for Global Change and Sustainability.
